SYMPA -- Systeme de Multi-Postage Automatique
(Automatic Mailing System)
User's Guide
Sympa is an electronic mailing-list manager that automates list management
functions such as subscriptions, moderation, and archive management.
To interact with Sympa, you can either login with your email address and password to the web interface at:
http://newsletters.ostg.com/wws
Or you can email commands to the address sympa@newsletters.ostg.com.
If you choose to use email, you can put multiple commands in one message. To be recognized by Sympa, these commands must appear in the message body and each line must contain only one command. However, if your email message has a content-type other than text/plain, the body of the message will be ignored. This includes messages that use multipart and text/html for their Content-Types. In these cases, you must put the commands in the Subject of your message for Sympa to recognize them.
The available commands are listed below. It is not always necessary to include the entire word when using a command. The capital letters denote the characters required to use a given command.
HELp
- Sympa will return this help file.
INFO <newsletter>
- This will give you more information about the <newsletter> Newsletter.
LISts
- A listing of all the Newsletters managed by the newsletter control center.
WHICH
- Sympa will return a list of all the newsletters you are subscribed to.
SUBscribe <newsletter>
- To subscribe or to confirm a subscription to the <newsletter> Newsletter.
UNSubscribe <newsletter> <email>
- To remove the <email> address from the <newsletter> Newsletter. The <email> argument is optional. If you don't include it, Sympa will use the "From:" address in your email message instead. If you wish to remove yourself from all of the newsletters, enter an * for the <newsletter> argument. Ex: unsubscribe * jdoe@mail.com
SET <newsletter> NOMAIL
- This will suspend your subscription to the <newsletter> Newsletter. You will stop receiving the newsletter messages until you reactivate your subscription. If you wish to suspend all of your newsletter subscriptions, enter an * for the <newsletter> argument. Ex: set * nomail
SET <newsletter> MAIL
- This will change your <newsletter> reception to normal mode. If you had suspended your subscriptions, this is the command you would use to reinstate your subscriptions. If you wish to change all of your Newsletter subscriptions, enter an * for the <newsletter> argument. Ex: set * mail
LAST <newsletter>
- Use this command to receive a copy of the last message sent to the <newsletter> Newsletter.
QUIT
- This indicates the end of the commands issued for Sympa. It isn't normally needed, but if you include a signature in your email messages, you need to include a QUIT command at the end so Sympa will ignore your signature.
